Do You Lack Willpower When Dieting?

Dieters fail. A lot of them do, anyway. And most of these dieters who give up blame one thing: lack of willpower.

In fact, some people believe willpower is a spiritual component that enables us to make difficult choices. Now, maybe you don't have an opinion about willpower on any other day...but you just might use willpower as a reason for unhealthy eating.

When you’re looking in the fridge at 2:00 AM and give in to your chocolate pie temptation, it’s not willpower’s fault. It’s a decision you made and need to be responsible for.

You also shouldn’t feel guilty for that decision. A dieting setback isn't the time to give up. It's one step back. You can still reach your goal, even though you let yourself get tripped up.

Next time, when you feel that pull towards unhealthy food, remember that there's middle ground between giving up and striving for 100% dieting perfection.

You know you want that chocolate pie, but the diet you've chosen forbids all sweets. So, instead of using the "lack of willpower" excuse that will let you eat that entire pie...simply give yourself permission to eat just a little bit.

Just be sure it really is just a small amount...and avoid making this into a habit. Just often enough to take the edge of the temptation to completely quit.

Learning to eat healthy and dieting takes time. You won't master this skill overnight. Or even in a month.

The real key here is to think before you eat. Take plenty of time to consider the consequences of what you're feeding yourself.

And consider your goals. Do you want that last piece of cheesecake...or do you want a healthy, strong, attractive body? Which do you really want more?

Just slowing down a little will help you build these healthy eating habits into your life. I know...you're in a hurry, on the go, or doing other activities while you make food decisions. These days, we just simply don't stop to think before we eat. But, we just have to, don't we?

Don’t let the lack of willpower get to you. There’s no reason to fear failure if you’re willing to learn from your mistakes as much as you rejoice in your successes.
